Castro Marim

Castro Marim

It is an idyllic destination for thousands of migratory birds, northern European sailing boats, cyclists, caravanners and car trips from the historic town of Castro Marim, where the famous salt-flower – a fine layer of salt, hand-picked daily, that is low in sodium and rich in magnesium, and which gives more flavour to meat, fish, salads and is beneficial for your heart and kidneys, unlike ordinary salt – is found in the centuries-old salt marshes. After admiring the flamingos, the stiltsand the landscape of marshes and canals, where the lamprey, shad, sole and eels of the Castro Marim Marsh Nature Reserve are born, follow the road littered with almond, carob and cork oak trees to Azinhal, then go down to the River Guadiana and follow the villages and riverside landscapes of Almada do Ouro, Foz de Odeleite, Álamo, Guerreiros do Rio with its Museum, and the Roman village of Montinho das Laranjeiras, to the Castle and arab village of Alcoutim.
